Password Best Practices

Strong passwords are one of the simplest ways to protect your accounts and your company. These habits make a real difference.

Length beats complexity

A long password is harder to crack than a short, complicated one. Use a passphrase of several unrelated words, for example four words strung together. It is easier to remember and stronger than something like P@ss1!.

Use a different password for every account

If you reuse one password and a single site is breached, attackers will try that password everywhere. A unique password per account stops one leak from becoming many.

Use a password manager

You cannot remember a strong, unique password for every site, and you should not try. A password manager creates and stores them for you, so you only remember one main password. Ask us if you would like a recommendation or help getting set up.

Never share your password

  • Do not share it with coworkers, family, or anyone who calls or emails asking for it.
  • We will never ask you for your password.
  • Do not write passwords on sticky notes or store them in a plain document.

Turn on multi-factor authentication

Even a strong password can be stolen. Multi-factor authentication adds a second check so your account stays protected. See "Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)" for steps.

Change a password right away if

  • You think someone else knows it
  • You entered it after clicking a suspicious link
  • We ask you to as part of a security step
